In 1999 zijn er hits van diverse pluimage; van punkrock en latinpop tot dance en Nederpop. Britney Spears is de topact van het jaar. De singles Baby One More Time en Sometimes pieken beide op nummer 1.
Dance is populair in 1999 met onder andere Wamdue Project (King Of My Castle, #2), Ann Lee (2 Times), Phats & Small (Turn Around) en ATB (9PM (Till I Come). De mambo is terug door Lou Bega en daarna scoort ook Shaft een hit met Mucho Mambo (Sway). Belgische en Deense dansmuziek doet het goed op (kinder)feestjes. De Deense formatie Toy-Box staat met twee singles tegelijkertijd in de top 10: Tarzan And Jane en Best Friend. Ander Deens succes is er voor de noveltyformatie Cartoons (Witch Doctor, #12, Aisy Waisy, tip). De Belgische act The Poco Loco Gang scoort drie hits: Poco Loco (#6), Let's Go To The Party (#11) en Tropical Paradise (Na Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye) (#23). De groep van de dj's Fred Vandermassen en Reinier Vanloo is genoemd naar de Brusselse discotheek waar ze beiden werkten als dj.
Punkrockers doen goede zaken in 1999: The Offspring (Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)), Korn, Limp Bizkit (Nookie, tip), Creed, Smash Mouth, Liquido, Live, Lit, Len en Goo Goo Dolls vallen op.
Voor latinpop in de hitlijsten zorgen Jennifer Lopez (#1 met debuutsingle If You Had My Love en #5 met Waiting For Tonight), Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Christina Aguilera en Enrique Iglesias. Een opvallend hitverloop kent I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You van Marc Anthony & Tina Arena. De single staat 11 weken in de tipparade om daarna 17 weken in de Top 40 te verblijven.
Black music is ook niet weg te denken uit de Top 40 in 1999. R. Kelly scoort vijf hits waarvan If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time met 8 weken 1 de grootste was. Ook Satisfy bereikt de top 5 (#4). Will Smith en Destiny's child (Get On The Bus #15 met Timbaland , Bills Bills Bills #8, Bug A Boo (#4) doen ook goede zaken. Producer Timbaland heeft een goed jaar met de hits Here We Come van Missy Elliott & Magoo (#29), de al genoemde Get On The Bus van Destiny's Child (#15) en Same Ole G van Ginuwine (#8).
Pop uit Nederland en Nederpop zijn succesvol. Net als in 1998 zijn The Vengaboys singles act nummer 2 van het jaar in Nederland. De successen van The Vengaboys beperken zich echter niet tot Nederland. In Groot-Brittannië dringen ze tweemaal door tot de top 5 en worden daar de op een na succesvolste act van het jaar. In Vlaanderen scoren ze twee nummer 1 hits met We Like To Party en Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! In Denemarken en Duitsland komt Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! tot #4. Die single haalt #1 in Spanje en Zweden. In Amerika wordt de cd The Party Album! met goud bekroond. Ook DJ Jean (Jan Engelaar) (#1 in Nederland met The Launch) doet het goed in het buitenland; hij bereikt #2 in Engeland. Ferry 'Gouryella' Corsten scoort in Engeland ook goed. Alice Deejay featuring DJ Jurgen halen #2 met Better Off Alone en #4 met Back In My Life. De single Zo Zal Het Zijn van Rob de Nijs staat tien weken in de Top 40, maar komt niet hoger dan 23. One Two Trio scoort vanaf 20 februari 1999 een hit met Tien Kleine Tuinkabouters (#10). Tijdens een korte maar uiterst succesvolle Marlboro Flashback tour vertolkt Bløf in maart het repertoire van Doe Maar, met als gevolg dat de leden van Doe Maar besluiten nog eenmaal bij elkaar te komen voor een reünietour en een nieuw album. Nationaal songfestivalwinnares Marlayne scoort een #24 met One Good Reason. Double Date bestaande uit de tweeling Barbara en Isabelle Kuylenburg valt negatief (vals gezongen!) op met E-Mail To Berlin, maar komt desondanks nog tot #35. Feyenoord wordt kampioen en daardoor scoort Jacky van Dam een hit met de remix van Hand In Hand Kameraden dat uit 1963 stamt. Anita Doth komt met solosingle Universe. Die flopt wereldwijd. Ook Lifting Up My Life in 2000 en This Is Reality in 2001 ondergaan dat lot. Normaal & Jantje Smit nemen een nieuwe versie op van de Zuiderzeeballade en die krijgt de titel Puik Idee Ballade mee. Het wordt #18. Op 9 oktober 1999 wint Erna Hemming als Emmma Shapplin de Henny Huisman Soundmix Show. Op 13 november komt Leef van Han van Eijk op 2 binnen in de Top 40. Het is de begintune van het tv programma Big Brother. Hoger dan 2 komt de single niet. In de verkooplijst wordt het wel een #1. Op track twee zijn de bewoners Bart, Ruud, Willem, Karin, Maurice, Sabine, Bianca en Mona te horen met een eigen versie van Tol Hansse's Big City. Ook Nederlandstalig en succesvol zijn Frans Bauer, Gordon, Def Rhymz en Marco Borsato. Frans Bauer scoort samen met Corry Konings een top 5 hit met Diep In Mijn Hart. Gordon heeft een top 10 hit met Never Nooit Meer. Def Rhymz scoort een nummer 1 met Doekoe. Marco Borsato scoort de laatste nummer 1 hit van het millennium wanneer hij op 25 december naar 1 stijgt met Binnen. Meer millennium-nieuws: Radio 2 introduceert in 1999 de Top 2000: de 2000 populairste platen aller tijden. Queen zal vijf jaar lang op één staan met Bohemian Rhapsody en na een jaar Avond van Boudewijn de Groot in 2005 terugkeren op de koppositie.
Samplers en covers zijn ook in 1999 schering en inslag. Gesampled wordt er door onder andere Tupac Shakur (Changes; The Way It Is / Bruce Hornsby & The Range), TQ (Westside; The breaks / Kurtis Blows), A+ (Enjoy Yourself; A Fifth Of Beethoven / Michael Murphy), Nas (Hate Me Now; Carmina Burana / Orff), Will Smith (Miami (And The Beat Goes On / The Whispers), Wild Wild West (I Wish / Stevie Wonder) En Willl 2K (Rock The Casbah / The Clash)), Lou Bega (Mambo No. 5; Perez Prado), A*Teens (Mamma Mia, Super Trouper, Gimme Gimme Gimme / Abba), Mathilde Santing (Wonderful Life / Black), Vengaboys (We're Going To Ibiza = Barbados / Typical Tropical), Miranda (Vamos A La Playa; Righeira), Loona (Hijo De La Luna; Mecano).
De Stichting Nederlandse Top 40 en de Stichting Mega Top 100 gaan een fusie aan en noemen zich voortaan Mega Charts. De albumlijsten van de Nationale Hitparade en de Album Top 100 fuseren in 1999. In de Top 40 wordt airplay een factor van weging. Dat levert veranderingen op in hitstanden en hitverloop. Er worden in Nederland 34,0 miljoen albums verkocht plus 5,5 miljoen singles. Andrea Bocelli is de succesvolste act in de albumlijst. Hij staat met vier albums genoteerd: Sogno, Romanza, Sacred Arias en Aria - The Opera Album. World Of Hurt van Ilse DeLange wordt het succesvolste album van het jaar. Ook Bløf doet het goed met twee hitalbums. Paus Johannes Paulus II staat dankzij een mediahype en hilariteit met Abbà Pater (toespraken en gebeden op muziek) in de Album Top 100. De zonsverduistering van woensdag 11 augustus1999 leidt tot het album Music For The Eclipse dat de Album Top 100 kort bevolkt.

1999 van Prince wordt opnieuw uitgebracht. In 1982 kwam de single tot 13, in 1999 tot 16. *** ABBA maakt een revival door. De cd’s 25 Jaar Na Waterloo 1 (#1 in april) en 25 Jaar Na Waterloo 2 halen beiden de top 10 albums. De Britse acts B*witched, Steps, Cleopatra, Tina Cousins & Billie staan 12 weken in de Top 40 met hun #14-hit Thank ABBA for the music. De A*Teens scoren hits met de ABBA-covers Gimme Gimme Gimme (#27), Mama Mia (#9), en Super Trouper (#12). *** Enrique Iglesias, de zoon van Julio, scoort twee hits met Bailamos (#4) en Rhythm Divine (#20). *** Bob Marley scoort postuum met het album Legend uit 1984 en de singles Sun Is Shining en Turn Your Lights Down Low, een duet met zijn schoondochter Lauren Hill. *** Gwen Guthrie (49) overlijdt op 4 februari 1999 aan kanker. *** Dusty Springfield (Mary O'Brien,59) verliest op 2 maart 1999 haar strijd tegen borstkanker. *** Op 10 april 1999 komt Mr. Oizo (Quentin Dupieux) de Top 40 binnen met Flat Beat, een speciaal voor de Levi's geschreven reclame. Het wordt een #4. *** Op 25 april 1999 schiet Larry Troutman zijn broer Roger (47) dood, daarna pleegt hij zelfmoord. Roger had in 1987 een #8 hit met I Want To Be Your Man. Beide broers waren producers van onder andere Dr. Dre en Tupac Shakur. *** Op 28 april 1999 gaat The Verve uit elkaar. *** Op 8 mei komt I Want It That Way van The Backstreet Boys op 1 binnen in de Top 40 en dat zonder verblijf in de Tipparade. Het is hun eerste Nederlandse nummer 1. Op 5 juni geven de Backstreet Boys een Millenium concert in de Amsterdam ArenA.*** Boyzone's Stephan Gately komt er voor uit dat hij homosexueel is. Hij heeft een relatie met de Nederlander Eloy de Jong, die lid was van de formatie Caught In The Act. *** Bills Bills Bills van Destiny's Child is op 17 juli 1999 de eerste Alarmschijf die NIET op nummer 1 in de Tipparade staat. De single staat op nummer 6 in de Tipparade. Tot dan toe was de Alarmschijf altijd de nummer 1 van de Tipparade, maar doordat airplay mee gaat tellen, is dat daarna niet meer altijd het geval. *** Op 25 augustus 1999 overlijdt Rob Fisher. Hij scheef I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) en scoorde samen met Simon Climie een #4 met Rise To The Occasion als Climie Fisher.*** Op 10 oktober vindt NetAid plaats. Een concert waarvan de opbrengsten ten goede komen van de vluchtelingen in het voormalige Joegoslavië. Onder andere Bon Jovi, Celine Dion, David Bowie, Robbie Williams, Bryan Adams en George Michael treden op. *** Op 26 oktober 1999 overlijdt Rex Gildo (60) na een sprong van twee hoog uit het raam van het toilet. Hij overlijdt in het ziekenhuis aan een hartaanval. *** Op 6 november 1999 overlijdt pianist Rob Hoeke (60) aan kanker. Margio was in juni 1966 zijn eerste hitsingle met Rob Hoeke's Rhythm & Blues Group. Zijn grootste hit scoorde hij in 1970 met Down South (Part 1) onder de naam Rob Hoeke's Boogie Woogie Quartet, een #8. Begin jaren zeventig verliest hij bij een ongeluk twee vingertoppen, maar hij kan zijn carière wel voortzetten. *** Op 6 november komt Will 2K van Will Smith binnen in de Top 40 terwijl de single nog niet te koop is. *** Robin Pors stapt op bij de Vengaboys. Hij wordt vervangen door Yorick Bakker, die eerder bij Velvet zat. *** Scatman John (John Larkin) overlijdt op 3 december aan kanker. Hij scoorde in 1995 een #2 met Scatman en een #3 met Scatman's world. *** Op 26 december 1999 overlijdt Curtis Mayfield (57). Hij raakte al in 1990 verlamd door een ongeluk tijdens een concert. (Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go was in 1971 zijn grootse hit: #33. *** De opvallendste clip van het jaar is die van Aphex Twin met Windowlicker. De single haalt de hitparade niet, maar de clip is wel een van de meest aangevraagde. *** Bij de Franse verkiezing van de zangeres van de eeuw wordt Edith Piaf in 1999 uitgeroepen tot zangeres van de eeuw. Celine Dion wordt tweede, Maria Callas derde. *** Jean-Michel Jarre neemt afscheid van het millennium met een lasershowconcert bij de piramide van Gizeh. *** *** VPRO's Song van het jaar is Scar Tissue van Red Hot Chili Peppers. *** Op 31 december 1999 is er geen Marco Borsato milleniumconcert in de ArenA. Het publiek had geen zin in een show op 31 december. Marco is wel onverminderd populair, want zijn single Binnen is de laatste nummer 1 van het decennium en zal ook de eerste van het nieuwe millenium worden.
DE TIEN GROOTSTE HITS
The Road Ahead (Miles Of The Unknown) werd gebruikt in een autoreclame voor de Mitsubishi Space Star. De respons op het fragment van 30 seconden is zo groot dat een hele single gemaakt wordt. Pas in de twaalfde week notering bereikt de single de nummer 1. Om daar vier weken te blijven staan. De single staat 25 weken genoteerd in 1999 en nog 3 in 2000. City To City bestaat uit Sandro van Breemen en Maarten van Praag. De groepsnaam is afgeleid van beider achternamen, twee grote Europese steden. Ze treden in Nederland overal op. City To City wint een Edison in de categorie Albums beste nieuwkomer. De groep krijgt ook de Mega Award 1999. Het succes van de single wordt gevolgd door een gelijknamig debuutalbum. De daarvan afkomstige opvolgende singles The Real World, Into The Now en House With Two Faces (#33 in 2000) doen amper wat. Een tweede album wordt opgenomen, maar door gerommel bij de platenmaatschappij wordt de releasedatum steeds verschoven en tenslotte afgeblazen. Sandro zal in 2002 met de rockband Plaeto beginnen, dan stopt City To City ermee.

Na de grote hit We Like To Party! (The Vengabus) uit 1998 scoort The Vengaboys in 1999 hun grootste hit met We're Going To Ibiza. Het is een cover van Barbados van Typically Tropical. Later in 1999 verlaat Robin Pors de groep en komt met de geflopte solosingle I'll Be Right There. In 1999 halen ook de singles Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! (#3) en Kiss (When The Sun Don't Shine) (#2) de top 3. In 1999 en 2000 winnen The Vengaboys een TMF Award voor Beste Dance Act. De groep weigert in 1999 de Exportprijs van Conamus voor hun successen in het buitenland, omdat ze alleen publieksprijzen wensen te ontvangen. In 2000 accepteren ze hem wel, omdat de Exportprijs een objectief meetbare prijs is. De Vengaboys zijn de enige Nederlandse act met twee nummer 1-hits in Engeland (Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! en We're Going To Ibiza). In 2000 zal The Platinum Album verschijnen. Op dit album staan de hits Kiss (When The Sun Don't Shine), Shalala Lala (#2 in 2000) en Uncle John From Jamaica (#7). De daarop volgende singles Cheekah Bow Bow (That Computer Song) (#32) en Forever As One (tip) worden niet erg succesvol in Nederland, maar weten wel de Top 30 van de Britse hitparade te bereiken. Begin 2002 zullen Yorick en Denise de band verlaten. Denise probeert het in 2003 nog eens solo met de Paula Abdul-cover Straight Up, maar dit nummer blijft hangen in de Tipparade. Yorick Bakker doet in 2004 mee aan het Universe 2004 toernooi van de World Fitness Federation. Samen met Jolanda Beuving wordt hij verkozen tot Beste Duo. In april 2004 trouwt Denise van Rijswijk met ex-GTST-acteur Winston Post. Hoewel de groep formeel niet is opgeheven, zijn er sinds 2000 geen nieuwe albums meer uitgebracht.

De 17-jarige zangeres Britney Spears scoort niet alleen met …Baby One More Time een hit, maar ook Sometimes (#1), (You Drive Me) Crazy (#2) en Born To Make You Happy (#9, #4 in 2000) halen de top 10 in 1999. Britney Spears werd geboren op 2 december 1981 in McComb, Verenigde Staten. Op acht jarige leeftijd deed Britney auditie voor de Mickey Mouse Club, een jongerenprogramma waar ook Justin Timberlake zijn carrière begon. Ondanks dat ze te jong was voor de show werd Britney doorgestuurd naar de Professional Performing Arts School Center. Na drie zomers trainen was Britney klaar voor Broadway en tv. Ze presenteerde twee seizoenen bij de Mickey Mouse Club en begon toen aan haar eerste demo's. Britney Spears kreeg een platencontract bij Jive Records. De Zweedse songwriter Max Martin kreeg in 1998 de opdracht een hit te schrijven voor het popidool in spe en dat wordt …Baby One More Time. De single wordt geproduceerd door Max Martin en Kristian Lundin. In de jaren erna scoort ze weliswaar hits (Oops! I Did It Again #1 in 2000) , maar haar privéleven haalt veel vaker de pers. Spears zal in 2002 na haar derde succesvolle hitalbum een tijdje vrij nemen om de film Crossroads op te nemen en tot rust te komen na haar breuk met Justin Timberlake (N'Sync). Een opmerkelijke gebeurtenis waar lang over nagepraat wordt, is een tongzoen met Madonna tijdens de MTV Video Music Awards in 2003. Samen met Madonna scoort ze een #6 met Me Against The Music. Begin 2004 veroorzaakt Spears ophef door op 2 januari in een dronken bui te trouwen met haar jeugdvriend Jason Alexander en op 5 januari - na amper 55 uur getrouwd te zijn - weer te scheiden. Op 18 september 2004 treedt ze voor de tweede maal in één jaar in het huwelijk met danser Kevin Federline (26). In 2004 haalt Toxic #4 en Everytime #4. Op 14 september 2005 bevalt Britney van een zoon genaamd Sean Preston Federline. Hun tweede zoon Jayden James Federline wordt geboren op 12 september 2006. Nog geen twee maanden later, op 7 november 2006, vraagt Britney een scheiding aan met als reden 'onoverkomelijke meningsverschillen'.

Mambo No. 5 is een gigantische hit in de hele wereld. Lou Bega haalt nummer 1 in Zwitserland, Oostenrijk, Frnakrijk, Nederland, België, Zweden, Finland, Noorwegen, Australië en Nieuw Zeeland. Voor het nummer Mambo No. 5 ontvangt Lou Bega in Amerika ook een Grammy-nominatie. Het origineel was al in 1949 een hit voor Mambo-koning Perez Prado. Nederlandse Ome Henk pikt ook een graantje mee van het succes. Zijn Mambo nr. 6 wordt een #15. Na Mambo No 5 komen vele singles van Bega op de markt, maar alleen I Got A Girl wordt in Nederland een hit (#26 in 1999). Lou Bega (pseudoniem van David Loubega) werd geboren in München op 13 april 1975. Lou Bega is de zoon van een Oegandese vader en een Italiaanse moeder, die beiden begin jaren '70 naar Duitsland kwamen. Als tiener vertrok Lou voor een aantal jaren naar Miami. Na zijn terugkomst ontmoette hij zijn latere producer, met wie hij Mambo no. 5 maakte. Lou zal later de dance-act Groove Coverage produceren.

Het Deense duo Toy-Box bestaat uit Amir El Faki (12 augustus 1973) en Anila Mirza (8 oktober 1974). Onder leiding van producer Per Holm scoort Toy Box drie hits in 1999. Tarzan And Jane is in februari de eerste en grootste, hoewel het geen nummer één hit wordt. Die felbegeerde positie haalt opvolger Best Friend wel, maar die staat 'slechts' 12 weken in de Top 40. De derde single The Sailor Song haalt nummer 14. Opvallend aan deze singles, die overigens alle drie afkomstig zijn van het debuutalbum Fantastic, is het feit dat elke cd een eigen geurtje had als je er overheen wreef. Zo ruikt Tarzan & Jane naar de jungle en Best Friend naar de ruimte. De muziek van Toy-Box bestaat net als bij Aqua het geval was uit catchy Eurodance-melodietjes met daarbij teksten over kinderlijke thema's. Ook bijhorende videoclips straalden kinderlijkheid uit. Toy-Box geeft op 13 november een concert in Paradiso. Toy-Box wist het succes van het eerste album niet vast te houden. In 2001 werd een nieuw album uitgebracht, getiteld Toyride, maar dit album en daarvan afkomstige singles (waaronder Superstar in augustus 2001) flopten stuk voor stuk. Niet lang hierna zal Toy-Box ermee ophouden. Anila probeert tevergeefs onder de naam Aneela een solocarrière van de grond te krijgen. Amir wordt dansleraar in Kopenhagen.

Sasha Schmidt werd geboren in het Duitse Soest op 5 januari 1972. Zijn debuutsingle If You Believe houdt het maar liefst 20 weken uit in de Top 40 en komt tot nummer 3. De opvolger We Can Leave The World flopt, maar vanaf 9 oktober 1999 staat I Feel Lonely maar liefst 10 weken genoteerd zonder hoger te komen dan 27. Zijn populariteit wordt in Duitsland in 1999 bekroond met enkele muziekprijzen, waaronder de Bambi en Comet voor beste nieuwkomer. In 2000 zal hij zelfs de belangrijkste Duitse muziekprijs voor beste nieuwkomer krijgen (een Echo). In 2000 wordt in Nederland het laatste tipfeit genoteerd met Let Me Be The One. Ook in de Duitstalige landen zal het succes na 2000 afnemen. Sasha's muzikale carrière begon als leadzanger van de schoolband Junkfood. De demo die de groep heeft opgenomen, leverde geen platencontract op en al gauw ging de groep uit elkaar. Sasha werd wel gevraagd als achtergrondzanger op het nummer Gibt's Doch Gar Nicht van de Duitse rapper Der Wolf. Sasha brak in Duitsland door in 1998, toen mij meezong op het nummer Wannabe Your Lover van de Duitse rapster Young Deenay. Hij werd op de hoes van de single ook genoemd. Dit nummer behaalde de zevende plaats in de Duitse hitlijst. De volgende single I'm Still Waiting namen ze ook samen op, maar deze keer was de grootste rol voor Sasha weggelegd. Dit nummer kwam op #14 in Duitsland. Dat jaar besloot Sasha zijn studie af te breken en zich geheel te richten op een carrière in de muziek.If you believe is de eerste single die Sasha solo uitbrengt. In 2002 mag hij als ambassadeur voor Unicef een optreden geven in het Vaticaan voor Paus Johannes Paulus II. In 2003 richt Sasha de rockabillygroep Dick Brave & the Backbeats op, waarvan hij als Dick Brave de leadzanger was. De groep brengt nummers uit de jaren 50 en 60 en speelt bekende nummers uit de jaren 80, 90 en 2000 in rockabillystijl. In december 2004 stopt Sasha met de rockabilly act, maar op 7 januari 2006 treedt hij nog één keer als Dick Brave op en welop het huwelijksfeest van de Amerikaanse zangeres Pink. Hij neemt Get The Party Started als rockabillynummer op. In 2006 verschijnen in Duitsland de albums Open water en Greatest Hits. Dat laatste album bevat het nieuwe nummer Coming Home dat voor Sasha de eerste Duitse top 10-hit sinds I Feel Lonely uit 1999 betekent. In 2007 wodt ook de opvolger Lucky Day een hit in Duitsland.

Blue (Da Ba Dee) haalt in vele landen nummer 1, waaronder Nederland. De opvolger Move Your Body zal in 2000 echter niet verder dan #19 komen. Eiffel 65 bestaat uit zanger Jeffrey Jey (Gianfranco Randone, geboren in 1970 op Sicilië), toetsenist Maury (Maurizio Lobina, geboren in 1973) en DJ Gabry Ponte (Gabriele Ponte, geboren in 1973). De groep werd opgericht in Turijn. Het tweede album Contact! wordt in 2001 uitgebracht, maar dit is geen succes. De groep zal in 2003 meedoen aan het prestigieuze Festival van San Remo met het nummer Quelli Che Non Hanno Età. In 2005 stapt DJ Gabry Ponte uit de groep om zich op zijn solocarrière te richten. De naam van de act is samengesteld uit een willekeurig - door een zelf geschreven computerprogramma - gekozen woord plus een getal dat per ongeluk op een demo geschreven werd.

Cher maakte eind 1998 een geslaagde comeback met Believe, die in 1999 zoveel punten verzamelt dat de single bij de beste tien eindigt. Op 20 mei 1946 werd Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre geboren in El Centro, Californië. Vanaf haar kinderjaren is ze al druk bezig met muziek maken. Nadat ze in verschillende bandjes heeft gezongen, loopt Cher in 1964 Sonny Bono tegen het lijf. Sonny werkt op dat moment bij producer Phil Spector. Nog geen jaar later nemen ze samen het nummer I Got You Babe op (in 1985 #1 voor UB40 & Chrissie Hynde). Al in 1965 heeft ze haar eerste Nederlandse solohit All I Really Want To Do (#15).
